Birmingham and Worcester Canal: Worcester to Droitwich Spa

For this delightful towpath walk we ventured north on the train and through the Malvern Hills (AONB) into Worcester. The surrounding countryside made the train journey very enjoyable; at nearly every stop between Gloucester and Worcester either Harriet or I would say something like, “Where are we? I’ve never heard of this place… but it looks lovely!”

We initially set off for Worcester with full intentions of doing a planned circular walk of the surrounding countryside and not follow the canal. I know, I don’t know what we were thinking! The canal was mentioned in conversation on the train and once we had left Worcester Forgate Street station we discarded our pre-printed maps and headed for the closest part of the towpath using Google Maps on our phones.

We walked through a housing estate and picked up the canal in the centre of town. The canal leaving Worcester looked urban but far from vulgar; we were typically envious of the canal-side houses.

The canal was littered with bridges, passing under the railway line, the A449 and also the M5 motorway as well as other smaller road crossings. There were locks to see as well and some breath-taking towpath scenery to be enjoyed as we left Worcester heading for our first stop at Tibberton.

We then arrived at the sort of attractive canal-side pub we had become accustomed to on our travels, The Bridge at Tibberton.
